On August 25 at around 15:00 local time, rescuers in Sydurland received an emergency call: a group of 25 people with a guide were exploring Breiðamerkurjökull when the cave collapsed. One tourist has been confirmed dead, two people remain under the ice, and one is injured but in stable condition.
Police Chief Sveinn Kristjan Runarsson told local news site RUV that all rescue efforts are being carried out manually and that two tourists have not yet been found.
"Four people are stuck under the ice, two have already been rescued, they received serious injuries. The search continues."
About 100 people are involved in the rescue operation, including services from Sudurland and the capital region. Three coast guard helicopters are also involved. However, local authorities are having difficulty delivering special equipment.

According to a traveler from another group, the cave was not very deep, about three to five meters. About ten minutes after they left the cave, a cracking sound was heard, but no one paid any attention to it.
Breidamerkurjökull is located next to the Jökulsárlón lagoon, one of Iceland's most popular tourist destinations.
