In the state of Massachusetts, it was forbidden to leave the at home after sunset (2 photos + 1 video)
You're sitting here, you don't know anything, and in Massachusetts, mosquitoes scared the authorities so much that they were forced to impose a voluntary lockdown.
In short, mosquitoes have bred there, and it would be fine if they were ordinary ones, but no. One of the local mosquitoes suddenly turned out to be a carrier of a deadly virus - eastern equine encephalitis.
This infection causes fever and brain swelling in people. According to statistics, a third of those infected with this virus die, and another two thirds are forced to fight residual physical and mental problems for the rest of their lives.
The Board of Health in Oxford, a town of 13,300, has banned residents from leaving their homes after 8 p.m., hoping it will reduce the risk of mosquito bites. There has already been one victim in the last four years - an 80-year-old grandfather.
The curfew is voluntary and mandatory, and city officials hope it will force people to return home before the peak mosquito season, reducing the risk of infection.
The local school district will enforce the curfew. This has led to the cancellation of extracurricular activities and sports competitions, which has caused discontent among parents, students and athletes. Almost 1,000 residents of Oxford signed an online petition demanding that sports fields remain open and not to blow up a tragedy because of one sick person. No one has yet cancelled mosquito spray.
To which the Director of Public Health, Rike Sterrett, told the outraged: "We do not want to see another case of human infection this year. One is too many. Even if you survive, there are usually serious health consequences."
This is how one mosquito can cause a fuss in an entire city.
