Rare Boba Fett Figurine Sold for Record-Breaking Amount at Auction (5 photos)
An incredibly rare Star Wars Boba Fett action figure has sold at auction for a record £1 million, making it the most expensive toy ever sold at public auction.
A plastic figure of the rocket-firing bounty hunter Boba Fett was released by Kenner in 1979 as a prototype. The 3.75-inch J-slot figure was one of 100 made for safety testing before going into mass production
However, during testing, it was decided to only release "non-firing" figures, as the original design was deemed a potential choking hazard for children. As a result, only non-firing figures with sealed missiles were released for sale.
There are only 30 J-slot prototypes known to exist today. The example sold is one of only three surviving Mailer J-Slot V2/2s and is in the best condition. It beat the previous record set in May, when an L-slot Boba Fett prototype sold for £412,185 ($525,000). L-slot prototypes are more common than J-slot examples, with 70 being made.
The figure was kept for many years by a member of Kenner's quality control department before being sold to a private collector, who put it up for auction. The unidentified buyer paid £1.04 million ($1.342 million) including fees, setting a new world record for a toy.
First appearing in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, Boba Fett has become an iconic character thanks to his cool suit and jetpack.
