A helicopter crashed on the roof of the Hilton Hotel in Australia (6 photos + 1 video)
On August 11, in the Australian city of Cairns, a helicopter crashed onto the roof of the Double Tree Hotel by Hilton and caught fire. About 400 people were evacuated from the building. The pilot died at the scene of the crash, and forensic experts are working to establish his identity.
The company that owned the helicopter said the flight was "unauthorized."
"Nautilus Aviation is working closely with Queensland Police, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and other authorities who are investigating the unauthorized use of one of our helicopters," the statement said.
It is unclear whether the pilot was a company employee.
Witness Veronica Knight said the helicopter was flying at full speed before it crashed into the hotel: "It came out over the sea, passed the pier, and was flying really fast. I thought, 'Something's wrong here.' It was flying quite low. I tried to get a video of it, but I didn't have time. Then it disappeared for about 5-10 minutes and came back along the sea, and then suddenly headed towards the development. I heard an explosion."
After the crash, a fire broke out, and the hotel guests and staff were evacuated.
A man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s were taken to Cairns Hospital. The pensioners were staying in a room on the floor below the crash site and were in a state of shock.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident looked like a bomb explosion. The helicopter crashed onto the roof, but some of the debris, including the blades, fell into the hotel pool.
