A short line in a job posting asking people born in the Year of the Dog not to apply has caught the attention of social media users.
A Chinese company has come under fire for posting a job posting and asking potential candidates born in the Year of the Dog not to apply because they would be automatically rejected.
An unnamed company in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, recently posted an ad for administrative staff. Work experience was required, as well as knowledge of office programs. A potential new employee could expect a monthly salary of up to 4,000 yuan. However, people's attention was drawn to a short line asking not to submit resumes if they were born in the Year of the Dog.
The message caused controversy on Chinese social media, with many users accusing the company of discrimination. A source from inside the unnamed organization said that their boss was born in the Year of the Dragon and believed that he was incompatible with people born in the Year of the Dog.
"Hiring employees born in the Year of the Dog will harm the company's development, so he specifically emphasizes that "dog people" should not submit resumes," the anonymous source explained, adding that there are no other special restrictions.
The publication notes that discrimination is not that uncommon in the Chinese labor market, but the absurdity of this situation has caused a storm of criticism in society. Many advise those born in the year of the Dog to sue the company.
"What's wrong with being born in the year of the Dog? I don't have rabies," someone else commented.
