The American decided to hand over the artifact to the Mexican Ambassador Estaban Moctezuma Barragan.
The vase, purchased on sale for just $3.99, turned out to be a nearly 2,000-year-old relic of the Mayan civilization.
American Anna Lee Dozier from Washington (USA) was looking at goods in the 2A thrift store when an unusual vase caught her attention.
“It looked old, but I thought it was a tourist reproduction that was made about 20-30 years ago,” the woman said in an interview.
Earlier this year, Anna was in Mexico on a work trip and noticed that some of the exhibits on display at the local anthropology museum bore a striking resemblance to this vase. She spoke with an employee of the establishment, who recommended that she seek advice from the embassy.
Dozier did just that, giving the specialists information about the size and photographs of the vase. To her surprise, the object was identified as a relic of the Mayan civilization, dating back to 200-800 AD.
In the end, the American decided to hand over the artifact to Mexican Ambassador Estaban Moctezuma Barragan during an official ceremony at the Cultural Institute.
“I really wanted the vase to return to its rightful place. I have three little boys, so I don’t want them to accidentally break it after two thousand years,” Dozier said.
Mexican officials later said that the artifact would join the collection of one of the local museums.
