Almost 70 years in the sky: the flight attendant with the longest experience died (3 photos)

Bette Nash began her career in 1957 and was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-serving flight attendant. The 88-year-old American woman died on May 17 after a long battle with breast cancer.





"Bette was a legend at American Airlines and throughout the industry, she inspired generations of flight attendants," American Airlines said on social media. "Fly high, Bette. We will miss you."

She was still employed by the airline at the time of her death, according to an American Airlines spokesperson.



Bette took her first flight at the age of 21, then she worked for the now defunct Eastern Airlines. In the 1990s she moved to American Airlines.

"Bette's remarkable career spanned more than six decades, during which she provided passengers with her warmth, dedication and unparalleled service," APFA said in a statement.

"Her passion for flying and dedication were truly inspiring. Bette's legacy will forever be remembered by the aviation community and all who had the privilege of knowing her."

In 2022, Guinness recognized her as the longest serving flight attendant, a title she still holds.

She told CNN in 2016 that she already knew what she wanted to do at age 16.

"I was sitting with my mom on a green leather couch at Washington [Reagan National Airport] and the TWA crew came up. The pilot and flight attendant walked across the room, and I thought, 'Oh my God!' This is for me,” Nash shared.



Although she served many famous passengers, including Jackie Kennedy, she recalled once helping a disabled person. Initially, it was left at the boarding gate, but Bette did not pass by. She brought him and sat him in a chair, and then spoon-fed him.

"I love people. I know my customers. I know what they want. Their needs are very important, and everyone wants a little love," the flight attendant said.
