A Chinese couple received banknote garlands worth a total of 160,000 yuan (about $22,000) on their wedding day. This original gift came from the groom's eight older sisters.
Curious footage of the newlyweds standing on stage while the groom's relatives take turns placing wreaths of 100-yuan bills around their necks has gone viral on social media.
“The garlands are too heavy for their necks. I’m ready to help in any way I can,” said one of the guests at the ceremony, who filmed and published a corresponding video on Douyin.
According to her, the groom's parents died, so the sisters took custody of their brother. They financed all the expenses of the wedding because they are married to rich men and can afford it.
“Giving him money is the easiest way to support him. The sisters came up with the idea of garlands, it was a surprise,” the guest added.
It is reported that the celebration took place on May 15 in the city of Shiyan (Hubei Province).
The ceremony sparked widespread discussion on social media in mainland China, highlighting the issue of boys being superior to girls in local families.
Users suggested that the groom's parents apparently really wanted a son and continued to have children until a boy appeared. In such families, older girls were often called “zhao di,” which translated means “bringing a younger brother.”
