The photograph shows a Roman mosaic from the 1st century AD. e. on the wall of a house in the city of Herculaneum, which was buried under volcanic ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79.
This is one of the few ancient cities that has remained almost untouched: it was protected from plunder by the ash that covered the city. The ancient master depicted the god of the seas Neptune and the nymph Amphitrite on the mosaic.
