“Great Expectations”: Oscar-nominated films that received the Golden Raspberry (10 photos)
There is a well-known expression: “We wanted the best, but it turned out as always.” Yes, Comrade Chernomyrdin was right. After all, this actually happens quite often. And in cinema, such failures occur with regular frequency. By the way, we have already made a post about films that were made according to the “Oscar bait” formula. This is such an offensive term that can be understood as “Oscar beggers.” But if in the last post the films simply didn’t get anything, then in this one the worst happened - “Golden Raspberry” and annoying ridicule from both critics and ordinary workers.
Alexander (2004)
He wanted to become the new “Gladiator” and “Braveheart”, but grabbed six Golden Raspberry nominations and the status of the most unreliable historical film.
Mommy Dearest (1981)
The film was intended to be a biographical drama about a famous Hollywood actress (in this case Joan Crawford), but critics found it "unintentionally funny" and received 9 Golden Raspberry nominations.
Radio (2003)
The film wanted to become the next Forrest Gump or Rain Man, but instead the leading man, Cuba Gooding Jr., who played a mentally retarded boy, received a Raspberry nomination for worst performance.
By the way, on Kinopoisk the film has a solid average audience rating of 8.0. At home, the film is loved much less.
Diana: A Love Story (2013)
The film wanted to become the new “Queen,” for which Helen Mirren (who played Elizabeth II) won an Oscar, but Naomi Watts was less fortunate, and her performance as Princess Diana earned the actress a Golden Raspberry nomination.
By the way, the role of Diana was later performed for an Oscar nomination, but it was done by Kristen Stewart in the film “Spencer” (2021).
Jobs: Empire of Temptation (2013)
The film wanted to become the new “Social Network”, but it couldn’t even become the best biopic about Steve Jobs - and not in all history, but only in the first half of the 2010s. Moreover, Ashton Kutcher was nominated for “raspberry” for his role.
Phantom Beauty (2016)
The director of The Devil Wears Prada, David Frankel, was trying to make a bright melodrama, and he found an excellent cast in Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley. However, everything was directed in such a way that the film received a “raspberry” nomination in the “worst screen ensemble” category. It took some effort.
Snowden (2016)
The film wanted to be the new Spotlight, but only achieved a Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actor for Nicolas Cage.
Cats (2019)
The film wanted to become the new “Chicago” or “Moulin Rouge!”, but received nine Golden Raspberry nominations.
Dear Evan Hansen (2021)
Another film adaptation of a musical, this time with a claim to much greater drama, which is compared not with “Grease” or other successful youth musical films, but with the same unfortunate “Cats”. Although “Evan Hansen” has fewer nominations for “raspberries” - only four.
Music (2021)
If you introduce a heroine with autism into the plot, be prepared that your film may not be perceived as the same “Forrest Gump” or “Rain Man”, but rather they will shove an armful of “Golden Raspberries” at you. The film has four nominations and three “wins”, including singer Sia who received her shameful statuette for her directorial debut in a big movie and for playing the same heroine Maddie Ziegler.
