How does an incandescent gas mantle work?

A glow grid, gas mantle or Welsbach mantle is a lighting device in which the light source is a grid containing oxides of rare earth metals, heated by a burner. The phenomenon of candoluminescence is used - the transfer of energy from the invisible part of the spectrum (infrared radiation) to the visible.
