An American filmed an alligator frozen in a pond (3 photos + 2 videos)
A US resident filmed how alligators spend the winter. Reptiles remain under frozen water, leaving only their nostrils on the surface of the ice.
In the USA, an alligator was found frozen under the ice in a frozen pond. The video, taken by Gator Country park owner Gary Saurage, shows the reptile completely motionless and seemingly frozen into a pond. Above the ice, only a small area at the tip of the mouth and a fragment of the tail are visible.

Sauraj said while eyewitnesses may be surprised and frightened by the sight, the alligator is simply hibernating due to the cold temperatures. “His heart beats three beats per minute. Guys, this is amazing. This is how alligators survive in the ice,” explained the park owner.
Scientists call this process brumation. Alligators are reptiles, that is, cold-blooded creatures that adapt to the temperature of their environment. During brumation, reptiles enter a state of low metabolism, during this period they are almost inactive, but still wake up from time to time to quench their thirst.

Alligators typically go into hibernation in mid-October and emerge from it in early March. More often, these reptiles choose a secluded place on land before brumation, but sometimes they “fall asleep” in the water. In such cases, reptiles raise their muzzles so that their nostrils remain above the ice and they can breathe.
