There are about 250 million rats in the UK, and the cold weather does not favor living outdoors. So the animals climbed to where it was warm.

During the warm summer, the rats gorged themselves on fast food and garbage dumps to decent sizes, and now they are looking for warm homes, but the British, for some reason, are not very happy with such neighbors and scold the garbage collectors.

The British Pest Control Association said there had been a 115% increase in calls for rat control advice in the last 90 days. Holiday trash collection disruptions could be one reason: Overflowing wheelie bins and black bags full of trash are a smorgasbord for rodents.

London pest control specialist Paul Bates says "there are a number of reasons, from reduced waste collection and poor drainage and sewerage maintenance to urban foxes that have learned to open food waste containers and throw them all over the pavement, creating a restaurant for rats." .

Heavy rainfall and flooding caused by Storm Henk has left some families facing the nightmare of tunnel rats.

Pest expert Mark Moseley said he was inundated with calls: “People have returned from the Christmas holidays to find the candy on their tree eaten. Rats have been in their homes. Pest control services are inundated with SOS calls from people saying they are being “attacked” and asking for “please help.”

London-based pest control specialist Paul Bates of Cleankill told The Mirror his calls about rat infestations have been steadily increasing since the pandemic.

He said: "In 2022 the increase was 6% on 2021, and last year it was 3%. I've had 235 calls about rats since December, which is high compared to the norm."

Frustrated Swindon locals have been posting videos and images of their overflowing bins on social media.

Garbage bins are under threat as city officials look to cut costs. The Local Government Association has estimated that England could face a funding shortfall of £4 billion over the next two years.
