In the city of Karumba in the Australian state of Queensland, there is an invasion of rats, like in the fairy tale about Nils and the wild geese. Only in fairy tales do they not write that uninvited guests, among other things, die en masse and decompose in the coastal zone, and because of this there is a terrible smell in the city. Local residents, not without reason, fear that this will lead to the spread of disease.

The first swarms of rats appeared in the city a few months ago. The rodents multiplied greatly due to favorable weather conditions, and now, faced with a lack of food, they try to swim to nearby islands, which is why they die near the water. This was reported by News.com.au.

Derek Lord, 49, a resident of the affected city of Normanton, sadly states the fact:

Buddy, rats are everywhere.

Derek said his pet ducks nearly went crazy when the rats tried to get into their cages. And this is not the only problem.

We have rental vehicles and they literally destroyed the car overnight by removing all the wiring from the engine bay.

As local residents say, the rats have turned into cannibals and are eating each other. And they also climb into the water and drown:

There is a stench along the riverbed. Last night in the moonlight the river seemed alive with the number of rats.

Videos on social media showed piles of dead rats piling up as flies and other insects swarmed around them in the water.

Residents worry the rats will have a negative impact on tourism because Karumba has always been a haven for fishing and bird watching.

According to ecology professor Matthew Crowther, the rat population will soon return to normal due to natural causes, but for now we just need to wait.

However, not everyone agrees with him.

With further wet weather forecast for Queensland, there is speculation the situation could get even worse.

We have information that more rodents are on the way

Gemma Probert, a fishing operator in Karumba, told AFP.
