Hyena made a mistake in choosing a victim (3 photos + 1 video)
The predator mistook the sleeping hippopotamus for a dead carcass. This mistake almost cost her her life.
In the footage, a hyena sneaks up on a motionless hippopotamus among algae.
Sensing danger, the heavy-bodied artiodactyl turns and rushes after the predator, and then lunges in its direction. Powerful jaws close just a few centimeters from the hyena.
The incredible footage was captured by safari guide Carlos Ismail, who was leading a tour of the Ngorongoro Game Reserve in Tanzania.
Carlos said: "This hyena was very lucky. She was alone and probably decided that the hippopotamus was dead and would be an easy prey. But she herself almost ended up in a huge mouth. She barely made it onto land. I have been working as a guide for nine years and never "I haven't seen anything like it. Although I witnessed the same hippopotamus chasing a lioness. They're not afraid of anyone!"
Hippos are extremely aggressive and are considered the most dangerous mammals.
It is estimated that hippos kill around 500 people each year in Africa, both from direct attacks and from capsizing boats.
