Reef squid can change color from transparent to opaque in an instant. This happens thanks to special cells in its skin called chromatophores. Chromatophores contain pigments that can expand or contract depending on a signal from the nervous system.

When the chromatophores expand, they scatter light and the squid becomes transparent. When the chromatophores contract, they absorb light and the squid becomes opaque.
