A man from Arkansas accidentally discovered a 4.87-carat diamond (5 photos)
A truly lucky man found a large diamond during his first visit to Crater of Diamonds National Park in Arkansas. Within the first 10 minutes of his walk, Jerry Evans spotted a piece of glass that turned out to be a gem.
Jerry Evans put the find in his pocket and continued walking with his girlfriend.
He said: "I thought it was a piece of glass, it was so transparent. I really didn't know. We picked everything up, thinking it was a diamond."
Returning home, the man sent the find to the Gemological Institute of America.
A few weeks later, he received a response that the sample presented was a diamond weighing 4.87 carats.
“When they called me and confirmed that he was real, I was incredibly happy.”
Crater of Diamonds National Park is a 911-acre site in Pike County, Arkansas. This is one of the few places in the world where gemstones can be found. And visitors are allowed to keep their finds.
To date, more than 35,000 diamonds have been discovered here.
It was here that the largest diamond in the United States was discovered - "Uncle Sam" weighing 40.23 carats.
Park officials said Evans' find, which he dubbed the Evans Diamond, is the largest in three years.
In 2020, Kevin Kinard of Maumell found a 9.07-carat brown diamond.
Assistant Park Superintendent Waymon Cox commented, "I'm glad Mr. Evans brought his diamond to the park to be officially registered. Mr. Evans' diamond is impressive. It is a brilliant white crystal, reminiscent of large specimens I have seen here in the past."
“Come to the park and look because you have a chance,” Chris advises treasure hunters.
In 2023, 798 diamonds weighing more than 125 carats were registered in the Crater of Diamonds.
