William Holbrook Beard - animal humorist and his funny creations with deep meaning (30 photos)
Animals are the same as people. Only better. And they can also demonstrate human vices clearly and with humor, making us think about life and what we do in it.
Looking at the works of the American painter William Holbrook Beard (1828-1900), one can assume that when creating them he reasoned something like this.
William Holbrook Beard
Beard was born in Painesville, Ohio. He was associated with one of the most authoritative European schools of the first half of the 19th century - the Düsseldorf Art School. In 1862 he became a member of the National Academy of Design.
Although the painter began as a landscape and portrait painter, William’s humorous images of animals, personifying common human vices, brought him fame and reproach from his easel and brush brothers. Other painters, representatives of conservative movements, considered such creativity frivolous. But criticism did not stop Beard's work from spreading.
His paintings may cause acceptance or rejection, but in any case one cannot deny the talent of the master, who worked in a genre that was very rare for that era and for modern times.
