Ireland's ideally shaped natural pool that looks like it was made for swimming (5 photos + 1 video)

Just don’t trust your first impression: swimming in it is too dangerous.





Today you can find swimming pools to suit every taste and budget. However, they are all created by man, and the reservoir on the Irish island of Inishmore is a creation of nature. But it’s incredibly hard to believe, because its edges are smooth and clear, as if someone had deliberately carved out a cup in the rock.



The Irish call this place Poll na bPéist, and it has many translations: snake's nest, wormhole, serpent's lair. There is even a conspiracy theory about the origin of this pool: many believe that it is the creation of some ancient civilization. However, the perfectly flat rectangular reservoir measuring 10 by 25 meters was actually the result of erosion of deep layers of limestone.





The ominous name was given to the pool for a reason. The depth of the snake's nest seems unreal for such a small area - about 300 meters. The basin is filled thanks to underwater channels that connect it to the Atlantic. Despite the fact that the pool seems to invite you to swim, it is life-threatening. The current in the channels here is very strong, it can easily suck you into the depths. There is also an underwater cave in the rocks, so the small rectangle really is fraught with many mysteries.



The snake nest is filled to its maximum during high tides; sometimes during a storm, waves crash onto the pool from above.
