Bremen hole: a magic piggy bank near the city hall (6 photos + 1 video)
Right in front of the Bremen State Parliament building in Germany, an unusual art object is hidden in the paving stones.
It looks like just a bronze hatch with an intricate pattern. Until you notice the narrow slit in the center. Toss in a coin, and the square will be filled with the sounds of a donkey, a rooster, or a cat meowing.
Each coin, falling into the slot, crosses a photocell. An electronic chip reproduces one of four sounds. The voices belong to the heroes of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale - the same Bremen Town Musicians.
Since 2007, the hole has been absorbing 12-17 thousand euros annually. The money goes to the Wilhelm-Kaisen-Buergerhilfe foundation, which helps those in need. Many tourists deliberately throw several coins in a row to hear the entire zoo choir. There is a belief that hearing all four voices in a row will bring good luck in travel.
Professor Fitz Haase created this art object as a modern interpretation of the city symbol. The sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians really stands near the town hall and, according to legend, brings good luck if you rub the donkey's hooves.
This is not just a piggy bank, but a portal to childhood. An ordinary coin turns Bremen into a fairy-tale kingdom for a second.
