TOP 10 best films by Brendan Fraser (13 photos)

7 December 2023

By the way, we completely forgot! Last Sunday was old Brendan Fraser's birthday. The actor turned 55 years old. As they say, better late than never, so let's congratulate this wonderful guy on the past. And at the same time, let’s remember the TOP 10 of his best films and several important facts from his biography.

Who is Brendan Fraser to you? Surely, the majority will answer that, of course, this is the cheerful and brave Rick O’Connell from The Mummy. Yes, it was this film that made the actor a world-class star. However, he has many other wonderful films to his credit, which reveal him not only as an actor in the comedy genre.

It would seem that Brendan is literally doomed to success. His height is 186 centimeters, his physique is like that of a Greek demigod, and all the girls on the planet fell in love with his childishly kind and soulful blue eyes. However, his career and life path cannot be called easy at all.

Few people know, but he performed most of the stunts in his films himself. This resulted in numerous and serious injuries. But due to workaholism and hyper-responsibility, he ignored health problems. As a result, he spent 7 years wandering around hospitals. He had part of a vertebra removed and Brendan went through many surgeries on his spine. He also had a knee replacement and surgery on his vocal cords. As the actor himself put it, “my body began to fall apart and was held together by duct tape.” As you understand, with such health... you can forget about filming blockbusters like "The Mummy". And in general, life becomes difficult due to constant pain and ailments. This was one of the reasons for the long pause in my career.

But the troubles did not end there. Fraser went through a very difficult divorce from his wife, which escalated into a loud scandal over alimony. The wife demanded huge sums - 900 thousand dollars in alimony every year. Note that at that time they had three sons, and the eldest was born with autism spectrum disorder. Naturally, with such alimony and career problems (caused by health conditions), the money quickly ran out. He even had to go to court to reduce the amount of alimony, but his wife raised a scandal and accused him of simply “hiding money.”

And it's also worth noting Brendan's 10 years of depression. Many noticed that despite his “heroic image,” he was a very vulnerable and gentle person. Close friends of Fraser said that the actor was somewhat reminiscent of a tragic "grown-up child" who constantly doubted himself. Brendan really suffered from self-doubt and considered himself an insufficiently talented actor. The cruel world of the film business left a big imprint on his soul, and coupled with problems with his health and personal life... he plunged into a long-term and severe depression. Now he himself says that to work in Hollywood and in the acting profession you need much thicker skin.

Despite the very loud start of his career, he never received serious recognition from film critics. Accordingly, there were no prestigious prizes and awards. However, everything changed in 2021 when Fraser landed the lead role in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale. A big dramatic role not only brought him back into the “game,” but also brought him an Oscar for Best Actor, a Golden Globe nomination and a six-minute standing ovation from the audience at the Venice Festival.

Brendan also starred in Martin Scorsese's latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, where his co-stars were Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

Well, let's wish Brendan good health! Both physical and mental. Through his difficult story, he proved that even in the darkest times, light can be found. Being a vulnerable and delicate person, he found the strength to start all over again and return triumphantly. He now lives on a farm an hour's drive from New York and takes care of his three sons.

So, now let's make sure that Fraser is not only "The Mummy". Let's look at the TOP 10 of his best films. By the way, what is your favorite movie of his?

School Ties (1992)

Brendan Fraser plays a talented Jewish student and athlete from a poor family who attends the same college as the children of wealthy white Anglo-Saxon Protestants in the not-so-politically correct 1950s in the United States.

George of the Jungle (1997)

Brendan Fraser in the remake of the 1960s animated series, which in turn is a parody of Tarzan. The main character, King of the Jungle George, spent his entire life outside civilization, after which he first came to modern San Francisco. But all the delights of a new world for him are not able to distract George from saving his friends from poachers - those especially liked the talking gorilla Ape.

Gods and Monsters (1998)

Brendan Fraser in the film, which won an Oscar for Best Screenplay. His hero, Clayton, a former marine, gets a job as a gardener at the villa of an elderly man (Ian McKellen). After some time, Clayton learns that his employer is none other than James Whale, the famous Hollywood director and creator of the Frankenstein films of the 1930s.

Blast from the Past (1999)

The premise of the film is in some ways similar to George of the Jungle. Fraser's hero, Adam, spent 35 years of his life in a comfortable bunker, as his no-nonsense father took too much of a possible nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. And so Adam, for the first time in his life, finds himself in Los Angeles in the late 90s. Now, for a long time, an adult who has seen only his parents needs to somehow make up for life.

The Mummy (1999)

Brendan Fraser as military man and adventurer Rick O'Connell. He serves in Egypt, where, after some circumstances, he meets the librarian Evelyn and her brother Jonathan. Together they go to the city of the dead Hamunaptra and, of course, accidentally awaken the ancient Egyptian priest Imhotep. A revived mummy can plunge the whole world into darkness if it is not sent back to where it came from.

Blinded by Desires (2000)

Brendan Fraser as down-on-his-luck programmer Elliot, who meets the Devil in the body of Elizabeth Hurley. He offers the hero to fulfill 7 of his wishes in exchange for a soul, but each time he cheats, turning the fulfillment of wishes in a light unfavorable for Elliot. The hero has one last wish, which it would be better to hold back and formulate as correctly as possible.

The Quiet American (2001)

Brendan Fraser stars as wily "quiet American" Alden Pyle, who becomes part of a love triangle with Vietnamese woman Phuong and British journalist Thomas Fowler, played by Michael Caine. The confrontation between men takes place in the 1950s against the backdrop of the First Indochina War, and the image of the hero Fraser symbolizes US foreign policy in Vietnam, which will subsequently lead to the well-known conflict.

Clash (2004)

"Crash" won Oscars for Best Screenplay and Best Picture. Brendan Fraser plays the role of a career district attorney who becomes part of an ensemble cast whose characters, in their interconnected mini-stories, find themselves in unpleasant situations, the main reason for which is racism in the United States of the 2000s.

The Air I Breathe (2007)

The film is based on an ancient Chinese proverb that states that human existence is made up of four cornerstones: Happiness, Pleasure, Sadness and Love. Brendan Fraser plays the role of Pleasure (as his character is named), a criminal who has the uncanny ability to see the future of everyone he meets.

Keith (2022)

Oscar-winning role of Fraser in Darren Aronofsky's film. His hero, Charlie, suffers from morbid obesity and leads a reclusive lifestyle. He once abandoned his family and is now trying to improve his relationship with his teenage daughter.
