A girl found a 1000-year-old coin on the school playground (4 photos)
A Year 9 student spotted a coin in the grass that looked like a 5p. Imagine her amazement when the find turned out to be a treasure from the time of William the Conqueror.
A 13-year-old student from Brownstone, England, was walking in the school yard when she discovered the treasure.
The history teacher found out that the find dates back to approximately 1069.
Last summer, workers were digging up and replacing a lamppost on the school grounds, which is likely how the coin ended up on the surface.
Vilte said: “I was just talking with friends, and then an object lying on the ground caught my eye, and I picked it up. I went up to the history teacher and asked: “Do you know anything about this coin, because it looks very strange and definitely doesn’t look like a normal one?”
"He started Googling and researching the coin and we discovered it was quite ancient. It was incredible. You don't expect to find something like that in your school. A real surprise."
Headteacher Dave Bennett said the coin's authenticity had been confirmed by experts from Leicestershire County Council.
“Currently, the coin is in a safe. We would like it to be exhibited in the museum along with the history of Vilte,” said the director of the educational institution.
At the time the coin was in circulation, the site of the school must have been agricultural land or forest. Also nearby is the road leading from Leicester to other cities.
The coin would be a significant loss to the person who dropped it, but to the farmer or worker it was of great value.
