An amazing miracle of nature: the Pavement of Giants in Northern Ireland (7 photos)
The world is full of mysteries, and one of these mysterious places is located in Northern Ireland. Locals refuse to believe in science theories, and believe that ancient myths and legends tell the truth about the origin of the Bridge of Giants, or, as it is also called the Road giants. In this post, you will learn about this amazing riddle.
This miracle of nature is located in the north-east of Ireland, on coastal margin of the Antrim Plateau. Scientists think it's amazing a structure that is flat and looks like a large paving stone pavement megalith, created by nature. The road of the giants consists of different by the height of the columns, similar to the stones of the pavement. Each stone represents a strikingly clear polygon with unnaturally straight sides. The pillars have different lengths and increase as they move away from seas.
The pavement of giants is one of the most mysterious places on earth. Many tourists visit this unusual space, in their desire touch the mysterious stones and take incredible photos. Not one scientific expedition was engaged in the study of a natural phenomenon. They determined that the columns were formed as a result of an ancient eruption volcano that occurred here 50-60 million years ago. The stones are composed from basalt and andesite (igneous volcanic rocks), which are tightly connected to each other.
Geologists have determined that during an eruption, molten basalt rose up through the chalk layers, creating a volcanic plateau. Later, the lava cooled and contracted, causing cracks to form in the rock. As the lava flow gradually cooled and receded, it left behind them are tall columns.
But local residents do not really trust the opinions of scientists. They believe in a legend passed down from generation to generation by their ancestors. A Celtic tradition says that this pavement was built by real giants. One of them is the mythical giant Finn McKumal, or, as he they say, Fin McCool decided to get even with his enemy the giant Goll, and for this he began to build a bridge, but did not have time, and the opponent came behind him first. Finn was sleeping at that moment, but his wife figured out how fool the enemy.
She swaddled her husband like a child so that Goll would not recognize him, and cordially began to regale the guest with cakes. But one cake was with surprise, a frying pan was hidden there, on which the giant almost broke his teeth. And the wife took another cake and gave it to Finn to eat, lying on the shore. Goll was very frightened, he thought that if they the child is such a hero, then what was his father then, and fled in fear back home. But when he ran away, due to his clumsiness, he destroyed the bridge. So and the pavement of giants appeared.
The Giants' Causeway is the only UNESCO heritage site in Ireland. She was included in this list in 1986.
