Over-the-horizon radar station Duga is a radar station created in the USSR for early detection of launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles by starting flashes (based on the reflection of radiation by the ionosphere). Construction of the station in Chernobyl was completed in 1985. After the events of April 26, 1986, the station was frozen and operation was discontinued due to possible damage to electronic equipment. For the characteristic sound on air made during operation (knocking) it was named Russian Woodpecker (Russian Woodpecker). The height of the station near Chernobyl is about 150 meters, the length is 800 meters.
