Toyota Reveals New Naturally Aspirated 2.0-Liter Engine Producing Around 220 HP (2 Photos)
At the Super Taikyu round at Okayama International Circuit, Toyota showcased its GR86 Future FR prototype, highlighted by an all-new 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine from the G20E family, reports CarWatch.
Built on the GR86 coupe platform, the prototype sets itself apart from the production sports car with a bespoke engine and suspension setup. The G20E internal combustion engine was originally conceived as a turbocharged unit, for which Toyota previously targeted an output of over 400 hp. Now, a naturally aspirated variant has broken cover.
To run without forced induction, engineers raised the compression ratio. Observers also noted potential revisions to the cylinder block. Output for the naturally aspirated version is projected at around 220 hp. According to development driver Kazuya Oshima, the engine differs from Toyota's standard M20-series 2.0-liter units with its high-revving nature, eagerly revving even higher than the engineering team had anticipated.
The prototype also features double-wishbone suspension front and rear.
The new engine could very well find its way under the hood of the next-generation GR86. The current model is powered by a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine producing 235 hp. At the same time, Toyota is planning widespread applications for this new engine family, including hybrid powertrains. ![]()
