Age Is Just a Number: Celebrity Trainer Reveals How to Stay in Shape After 40 (11 photos)

Not every woman over 40 can afford a celebrity-style entourage of stylists, nutritionists, and personal trainers. But anyone can achieve an incredible physique with the right approach. Celebrity personal trainer Lucy Wyndham-Read knows firsthand what it takes to sculpt a dream body. Here, she shares her best advice for staying lean, strong, and energized past 40. Read on for her top secrets to lasting youth and vitality.

Now in her 50s, Lucy continues to inspire over two million YouTube subscribers by leading by example. The British fitness expert emphasizes that while women in their 40s are still young, the body inevitably begins to change. Muscle mass and bone density naturally decline with age, making regular physical activity essential for healthy aging, vitality, and overall well-being.

Here is what the celebrity trainer recommends doing—and avoiding—to stay youthful, toned, and vibrant after 40.

1. Cardio for a Healthy Heart

The heart is the most important muscle in the body, making cardiovascular fitness a top priority. Regular cardio workouts keep blood pressure in check and significantly lower the risk of heart disease. Choose whichever activity you enjoy most: brisk walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming. The key is maintaining the right level of intensity.

To find out if you're hitting the sweet spot, use the talk test. If you can carry on a full conversation effortlessly, your pace is too slow. If you can't catch your breath to utter a single word, you're pushing too hard. Aim for an intensity where you can comfortably give short, one-word answers like “yes” or “no.” Strive for about 30 minutes of cardio five times a week. If you're short on time, you can easily break this down into three 10-minute sessions throughout the day.

2. Skip the Static Planks and Crunches

Many people believe that holding static poses and planks is essential for a toned physique, but the benefits of the traditional plank are often overstated. Holding a plank puts unnecessary strain on your knees and lower back while keeping your body completely motionless. In fact, overdoing them can actually widen your waistline. Instead, focus on dynamic core exercises. Dynamic movement protects your neck and spine while firing up all major muscle groups. Plus, it gets your heart rate up to help burn fat.

Try standing toe taps: stand tall, kick one leg straight out in front of you, and touch your toes with the opposite hand. Simple, dynamic movements like this are far more effective at keeping your waistline trim and defined.

3. Move in Multi-Directional Planes

Our bodies naturally move in multiple directions: forward and back, side to side, and rotationally. To activate every muscle group properly, your workouts should mirror this variety. High-intensity multi-directional routines are perfect for this. Jumping jacks, alternating lunges, and torso twists all build functional, full-body strength.

4. Don't Go Too Heavy with Weights

Lifting heavy dumbbells and kettlebells places significant stress on your joints, especially if you are new to strength training. When getting started, skip the heavy iron and focus on mastering form with bodyweight exercises. For women over 40, weight-bearing exercise and flexibility work are crucial for preventing osteoporosis, but you shouldn't overload your joints with excessive weight. If you do use free weights, choose a load your body can handle comfortably. Bodyweight squats, push-ups, and lunges—combined with running and power walking—are plenty to keep your bones and joints strong.

5. Stretch Before and After Workouts

Our muscles and connective tissues naturally become stiffer with age. Stretching right after a workout, while your muscles are still warm, provides incredible benefits. A chest stretch is an ideal post-workout cooldown: clasp your hands behind your back, gently open your chest, and squeeze your shoulder blades together. An upper-back stretch is just as helpful: extend your arms forward, interlock your fingers, and imagine you're hugging a giant beach ball while breathing deeply into your back.

6. Steer Clear of Bad Fitness Advice

Unfortunately, not all online fitness routines are safe or effective. While the internet is full of fantastic workout programs, it is also flooded with bad advice. In many cases, it is impossible to verify the professional credentials of influencers posting workouts on social media.

Before jumping into a workout program recommended by an online instructor, do some research: check their credentials, read real user reviews, and stay cautious when anyone tries to sell you a quick fix. A large follower count does not make someone a qualified expert. Look beyond polished photos and seek out authentic testimonials from people who achieved safe, lasting results.

7. Do Workouts You Genuinely Enjoy

If you dread the gym or despise running, don't force yourself to do them. You will never stick with a program you hate. Find activities that genuinely make you happy and don't be afraid to try new things. You don't need to spend hours working out, either. A brisk seven-minute routine in the morning, seven minutes at lunch, and another seven in the evening can work wonders. Consistency and intensity matter far more than duration. The real goal is staying active throughout your day.

8. Avoid Static Squat Holds

Holding a deep squat position puts tremendous pressure on your knee joints, which can easily lead to injuries after 40. Dynamic squats and controlled movements are much safer and more beneficial. Moving fluidly through the exercise builds functional strength and keeps your joints lubricated. If your muscles are fatigued and you force yourself into static holds, you significantly increase the risk of damaging your knees.

9. Make Mental Health a Priority

Women in their 40s often carry more stress than ever before, balancing career, family, and personal responsibilities. Countless scientific studies have shown that regular physical activity helps ease anxiety, fight depression, and lift your mood. Consistent exercise also boosts self-esteem and sharpens cognitive function.

Yoga is one of the best ways to restore mental balance and relieve tension, and there are countless free sessions available on YouTube. Alternatively, make time for daily walks in green spaces—spending time in nature helps reset your mind and triggers a rush of feel-good endorphins.

Looking and feeling phenomenal in your 40s is entirely within reach. In fact, one British mother and daughter are routinely mistaken for sisters, racking up thousands of likes on Instagram with their youthful looks.
