90-Year-Old Bodybuilder Claims 19th Title in Hiroshima Day After Milestone Birthday (5 Photos + 1 Video)
While most of us groan just trying to get off the couch, 90-year-old Toshisuke Kanazawa from Japan is busy hitting double bicep poses on stage. The nonagenarian proved that age is truly just a number with a spectacular win at the 38th Japan Masters Championships in Hiroshima.
What makes the victory even more impressive is that he reached the milestone birthday right on the eve of the competition, making his gold medal in the 85-and-over category the ultimate birthday gift.
Toshisuke is a true legend in bodybuilding circles. He launched his athletic career in his youth, winning the Mr. Japan title twice in the early 1960s. By age 34, however, he decided he had had enough, put away the barbell, and retired from the sport. For 16 whole years, he lived as a regular citizen who didn't give a second thought to shredded abs.
The bodybuilder in his youth
Everything changed when Toshisuke turned 50. His wife began struggling with serious health issues. To offer her emotional support and lead by example, the devoted husband decided to head back to the gym to prove what the human body is capable of. And as it turns out, he got a little carried away.
At the tournament in Hiroshima, the Japanese athlete beat out six other remarkably fit seniors. When the 90-year-old took the stage for his one-minute solo posing routine set to music, the audience gave him a standing ovation that younger gym-goers would envy.
This victory marked Kanazawa's 19th major career title. He has no intention of hanging up his posing trunks anytime soon. Right after the award ceremony, he told reporters with a smile: "Yes, I have a bit less strength now, and a few more wrinkles on my body. But the finish line is still a long way off."
Toshisuke’s immediate plans are to keep competing until he is at least 93.
