Gandalf Set to Return in New 'Lord of the Rings' Movie (2 Photos + 1 Video)

87-year-old actor Ian McKellen has been spotted back in costume as the iconic wizard Gandalf for the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The photo was likely snapped right after he stepped out of the makeup chair. 
McKellen has played the legendary wizard for 25 years. This marks his return to the role of Gandalf 12 years after his last appearance in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. He first stepped into the wizard's robes back in 2001 at the age of 62.
The film is directed by Andy Serkis, who is also reprising his role as Gollum.
McKellen and Serkis aren't the only familiar faces returning to Middle-earth. Elijah Wood is set to play Frodo Baggins once again, while Lee Pace will return as Thranduil.
Chronologically, The Hunt for Gollum is set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. Having lost the Ring to Bilbo Baggins, Gollum leaves his cave to track it down. Fearing Gollum might reveal the secret of the One Ring or fall into Sauron's hands, Gandalf tasks Aragorn with hunting him down. The story begins right after Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday celebration and wraps up before the events in Moria.
