Warner Bros. has announced the key cast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring that will focus on the search for Gollum. Several actors from the original trilogy will reprise their roles. Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, Elijah Wood will play Frodo, and Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Gollum and also direct the project. Lee Pace has also been confirmed to return as Thranduil. But who will be the new Aragorn?
67-year-old Viggo Mortensen did not return to the role, so he was replaced—he was intended to be younger in the prequel than in the original film...
The new Aragorn is Jamie Dornan—a 43-year-old Irish actor best known for his roles in Fifty Shades of Grey, Robin Hood: Origins, and the TV series Once Upon a Time.
The premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
