India's Mahindra has unveiled its new Scorpio Lifestyler midsize pickup truck. Built on a traditional body-on-frame chassis, it competes in the same segment as heavyweights like the Toyota Hilux—yet comes in significantly cheaper, starting at just $21,000.
The truck is home-grown through and through, with design work handled in Mumbai and engineering developed in Chennai. Mahindra plans to export the model under the streamlined name "Lifestyler" to Australia, New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
Underneath, it features a classic setup with a heavy-duty ladder frame and traditional internal combustion engines. Full LED headlights and taillights come standard. Official images currently showcase only the double-cab, five-seater configuration, though more utilitarian single-cab versions could be added down the line.
Inside, the dashboard is centered around a vertical touchscreen flanked by climate vents. The cabin keeps physical buttons for the climate controls alongside a multifunction steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster, and aluminum-look interior trim.
Mahindra has yet to reveal full technical specifications, but non-electrified powertrains are expected under the hood: a 2.0-liter gasoline engine delivering 200 hp and a 2.2-liter diesel pushing out 175 hp. Buyers will have a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, with both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive available.
The Scorpio Lifestyler is priced from $21,000. By comparison, the Isuzu D-Max starts at $27,000 in India, while the Toyota Hilux commands a starting price of $35,000.
