New mid-size pickup RAM 1200 introduced for $25,200 (9 photos)
The Ram brand, part of the Stellantis concern, presented a new pickup truck with the index 1200. The presentation took place in Mexico, which will be the first market for the model. It was estimated in the range from 444,900 to 668,900 pesos (25.2-38 thousand dollars).
In the second half of the last decade, Ram already produced the 1200 pickup, which was a copy of the Mitsubishi L200/Fiat Fullback. The new truck is also not an original development: it is a redesigned Peugeot Landtrek, released in 2020 by a joint venture of the PSA group (now part of Stellantis) and the Changan company based on the Chinese Kaicene F70. Variants of the latter model are known as Changan Hunter and Hunter Plus.
The new Ram 1200 differs from the donor only in the radiator grille and nameplates. The base Tradesman, available in single-row and double-row cabs, gets an unpainted front bumper and 16-inch steel wheels. The older versions of Bighorn and Laramie, which only come in four-door versions, received 18-inch alloy wheels, a body-colored body kit, and chrome trim on the grille.
The cabin is equipped with analog instruments with a small screen and a 10-inch multimedia touchscreen with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The finishing can be made of fabric or leatherette. Depending on the version, equipment may include six airbags, front and rear parking sensors, all-round cameras, a lane marking monitoring system, and climate control.
The only engine available in Mexico is a 2.4-liter petrol turbo-four with 210 hp. and 306 Nm. It can be combined with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. By default, the pickup truck is rear-wheel drive; hard-wired all-wheel drive is offered only in the most expensive version.
The new Ram 1200 has a payload capacity of 1,150 to 1,210 kg and can tow a three-ton trailer. The car will be imported from China. In the Mexican market it will compete with the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Frontier and Chevrolet S10 Max.
