A bizarre phenomenon in the Japanese city of Nara is drawing tourists from all over the world. Every evening in Nara Park, hundreds of sika deer gather in a single spot and sit side by side in quiet order for an hour. Zoologists and locals alike are baffled by what prompts these majestic animals to stick so strictly to a schedule, arriving right on time for their daily summit.

Read on to discover how this mystery unfolds.

The Japanese city of Nara is famous for its vast population of sika deer, which roam the streets freely, begging for—or blatantly snatching—treats right out of passersby's hands. But during the summer months, a completely inexplicable event takes place, known locally as "shikadamari," which translates to "deer gathering spot."

The crowds are larger than usual. Every evening at around 6:30 PM, the deer emerge from every corner of Nara Park and settle down in one specific location—directly opposite the Nara National Museum, located right inside the park.

They rest there in complete silence until 7:30 PM before slowly dispersing in all directions.

More than 600 deer have been counted showing up for these nightly meetups.

According to official counts, 1,388 deer live in Nara Park. Why nearly half of the total population mysteriously converges on a single spot—and more importantly, why—remains unknown.

One of the most plausible explanations for the phenomenon is that the deer gather to cool off. The spot features a large underground ventilation vent that offers the animals a much-needed blast of cool air.

However, sitting packed shoulder to shoulder would logically make them even hotter due to body heat. Besides, wouldn't wading in a shady stream be a far better way to beat the heat?

It also fails to explain why the deer sit outside the museum specifically between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM on summer evenings.

Even staff at the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation are at a loss to explain the behavior.

The summer gatherings of Nara's sika deer remain an officially recognized enigma that no one has solved. For an hour, hundreds of majestic creatures seem to meditate in the rays of the setting sun, soaking in the peace before quietly drifting off across the park for the night. Perhaps in time, we will finally unlock the secret of Nara's antlered residents.

Remarkably, sika deer in Nara coexist freely with human residents. Protected by law, they have free rein to roam wherever they please. Photographer Yoko Ishii captured a series of stunning images dedicated to these charming animals.
