Giant magnet for "artificial Sun" tested in China
A 582-ton magnet will serve as a key component of a fusion reactor scheduled to launch by 2030.
China has announced the completion of development and testing for two key superconducting magnet systems intended for future fusion reactors. The primary unit is a toroidal magnet measuring approximately 21 meters in length and weighing 582 tons; developers describe it as the largest of its kind for fusion energy facilities. The magnet is designed to confine super-hot plasma—reaching temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees—preventing it from coming into contact with the reactor walls. China aims to conduct its first demonstration of fusion energy generation around 2030.
In the future, this "artificial sun" could provide virtually unlimited amounts of energy.
