The jaboticaba is a Brazilian grape tree native to the tropics and can grow up to 12 meters tall. At first glance, its trunk appears to be covered in giant beetles or strange growths. But take a closer look—these are juicy fruits! The jaboticaba's unique feature is that the berries grow directly on the trunk and thick branches. This rare phenomenon is called cauliflory and is also found in cacao, persimmon, and breadfruit.





Where the miracle tree grows

Jaboticaba is found in Portugal, Argentina, and, of course, Brazil—hence the name. Locals pick the juicy purple fruits straight from the tree and eat them on the go. The flavor is reminiscent of grapes with a slightly tart note.



The fruits are a popular ingredient for jams and freshly squeezed juices. They are also used to make wine and strong liqueur. Sometimes, there's simply no other choice. The berries don't keep well. Fermentation begins just three days after picking. That's why Brazilians joke: "Either eat it or drink it."

A Long Journey to a Harvest

Thinking of planting this tree? Be patient. Jabuticaba grows incredibly slowly—it can take 10 to 20 years before the first fruit is produced! But once the tree reaches maturity, it's worth the effort. Harvests become abundant, and the plant itself can live for over 100 years.





The good news is that the tree adapts well to a variety of conditions. It thrives best in moist and slightly acidic soil, but will even grow in alkaline soil. Regular watering and warmth are key.

Flowering and Fruiting

In spring and summer, the trunk and branches of the jaboticaba are covered with unusual white flowers with long stamens. It's a fantastic sight—it's as if the tree were dressed in white lace. The flowers appear directly on the bark, and then fruit sets in their place.



Active fruiting lasts from spring to fall. This amazing grape tree produces several harvests per season. And if the plant receives enough moisture and lives in an ideal climate, it can bloom and fruit year-round!



The fruit is about 4 centimeters in diameter. Beneath the thin, dark purple skin lies translucent white flesh with 1-4 large seeds. The taste and texture are reminiscent of the Isabella grape.



Medicinal Properties

Jaboticaba isn't just a tasty berry, it's also a natural remedy. Locals use the dried fruit peel to treat asthma, diarrhea, and tonsillitis. It's a proven folk remedy.



But modern scientists have discovered the most interesting thing. Several anti-cancer components have been found in jaboticaba fruits. Research is ongoing, but there's already hope that this plant can help fight cancer.
