A Grandfather Who Stayed in 300 Five-Star Hotels for Free Was Captured in India (4 photos)

Meet the new idol of all freebie lovers and professional freeloaders. In India, police have finally caught 69-year-old Bingson John. This seemingly respectable gentleman managed to turn a simple scam into a luxurious lifestyle that lasted almost 36 years!

While ordinary tourists accumulate loyalty points and hunt for discounts on Booking.com, our hero traveled the country and indulged in every luxury. According to investigators, since 1990, he has managed to vacation completely free of charge in more than 300 luxury five-star hotels in 10 different Indian states.

The secret to this criminal scheme's Caucasian longevity turned out to be as simple as pie. Bingson John is a natural-born psychologist. Arriving in each city, he would stumble into the most expensive premium hotel and charm the staff from the get-go.

Depending on his mood and the crowd, the grandfather would pose as an experienced foreign guide, a respectable English teacher, or an enlightened yoga instructor.

He would instantly gain the trust of the administrators, order top-notch service, eat lobster, drink expensive alcohol, and then, a couple of days later... vanish into thin air, leaving only a huge, round zero at the reception desk in lieu of payment. During interrogation, the old man frankly admitted that he was inspired to take this slippery path by his "youth idol," the legendary international con man Charles Sobhraj (the same "Snake" about whom Netflix made an entire series). Our Indian follower decided to completely replicate his disguise methods.

As is typical in any good crime story, the grandfather's greed led to his downfall. The final destination of his 36-year ultra-tour was the five-star Hyatt Hotel in Raipur.

Bingson had a wonderful time there, and upon checkout, he decided not only to leave quietly but also to make a killing. He "cleverly" moved out, "forgetting" to pay a bill of $760 (approximately 63,000 rupees). But that wasn't enough, and in the confusion, the old man took a $1,770 laptop he'd rented from the hotel, supposedly for "urgent work."

The hotel administration was slightly taken aback by such impudence and immediately called the cyber police. Detectives quickly scanned cell towers, tracked the device, and 72 hours later, arrested the old man in another city. Incidentally, the laptop was found on him.

The most beautiful thing about this story is the reaction of the man himself. During interrogations, Bingson John behaves like a true philosopher, readily confessing everything and regretting nothing.

It turns out that during his turbulent career, he has already served time behind bars in various regions of the country, totaling over 15 years. For the average person, this is a tragedy, but for Bingson, it's just the way it is. Investigators revealed that the con man laughingly refers to state prisons as his "permanent residence," and considers five-star hotels simply "pleasant vacation spots between sentences."

Currently, the resilient retiree is facing a wave of criminal cases across India. Apparently, Bingson John's "resort season" will be over for the next few years, and he will have to return to the familiar confines of prison. But you have to admit, he lived well!
