In Uzbekistan, They Tried to Save on Electric Car Charging Using the Sun (4 photos)
The owner installed panels on the roof of his BYD, and a controller and battery in the trunk.
One owner of a BYD Song Plus crossover in the Tashkent region decided to conduct an unusual experiment – creating his own "free" charging station right on the car.
Uzbekistan is trying to save money on electric car charging using solar power
A video posted on social media caught the attention of Avtoelon.uz: the owner installed a solar panel on the roof of the crossover using roof rails.
The entire charging system includes:
- 640W panel,
- charge controller,
- battery for solar energy storage,
- vehicle charging system.
The result is a homemade autonomous power station that allows you to charge your car without a home network or public charging stations. In the video demonstrating the operation, the BYD starts charging and displays up to 1 kW of charge in clear weather during the day.
Of course, this isn't fast. There are also some caveats: the efficiency of this type of charging decreases in cloudy weather, and the system doesn't work at night.
However, according to statistics, Uzbekistan averages about 300 sunny days a year, meaning energy can be generated almost year-round.
And one more thing: to connect the cable, the owner must leave a window or trunk slightly open.
As a result, in real life, this system is not capable of completely replacing a conventional charger. A solar panel will only recharge the battery during the day, when the car is parked in a private yard or at a summer cottage, for example. And in this scenario, it's not necessary to mount the panels on the roof of the car itself. It's easier to use the roof of your own home.
Yes, such a panel can be used for travel, where autonomy is important. However, the question arises about the legality of rooftop installation and the space the system occupies, both on the roof and in the trunk. ![]()
