The Pentagon promises to release thousands more files. However, as Axios warns, the declassified documents contain no clear images of any "little green men" or "flying saucers."

For the first time, the US Department of Defense has published a section on its official website about unexplained phenomena or unidentified flying objects in the sky. The declassified archive includes more than 160 files with photos, videos, and military reports from around the world. It is noted that the information was collected over many decades by the Pentagon, the US State Department, the FBI, and NASA.

"Today, the Department of Defense announced the initial release of new, never-before-seen files on unidentified anomalous phenomena as part of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE) program.

The materials archived here represent unresolved cases, meaning the government is unable to make a definitive determination on the nature of the observed phenomena," the Pentagon statement said.

One of the most discussed recordings was made in 2024 over Japan—the footage captured by American pilots showed an object shaped like an American football. The files also include numerous recorded UFO flights over Africa (2025), Greece (2023), and other regions.

Declassified NASA files on the Apollo missions are also included. In the Apollo 11 crew's post-flight reports, Buzz Aldrin describes how, the day before landing, the mission encountered and recorded a large object with a monocular. Then, in the darkened cabin, Aldrin and Armstrong observed periodic bright flashes of light at intervals of several minutes, visible even with their eyelids closed. After launching from lunar orbit toward Earth, the crew noted a powerful directional light source, which they attributed in their flight log as a "possible laser" from space, "not ours."

Photographs from the Moon include three point sources of light forming a triangle above the lunar terrain. The CIA and Pentagon write: "There is no consensus on the nature of the anomaly, but it may be a physical object."

It is noted that the files were released as part of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE) program. It is aimed at increasing transparency regarding information on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP, formerly known as UFOs).

According to media reports, only the first batch of files has been released. Congressman Tim Burchett said that the UFO files released today are just a drop in the bucket, and that the most "amazing part" is yet to come.

The US military captured footage of a strangely shaped object moving erratically in the sky.

Perhaps the most mysterious: a flying disc with the inscription "Russia" found in Illinois in 1947
