It's a dangerous business to embark on a cruise in 2026. It would seem the era of mass quarantines should have been consigned to the history books, but reality dictates its own rules: modern floating cities are increasingly turning into giant Petri dishes.





Aboard the Caribbean Princess, a vacation turned into a survival quest. Among the more than 3,000 passengers and crew, 115 people contracted the highly contagious norovirus. This new type of "seasickness" spares no one, causing a classic set of symptoms: debilitating vomiting and diarrhea.

Those infected have already been isolated in their cabins, and the ship itself is scheduled to remain en route until May 11. For Caribbean Princess, this isn't just an incident, but part of a worrying statistic. This is the fourth outbreak of gastrointestinal illness on US cruise ships since the beginning of the year.



But if norovirus is "just" a ruined vacation, the situation on another ship looks much more grim. The MV Hondius, stricken with the potentially more dangerous hantavirus, has finally arrived in the Canary Islands.

Here, cruise romanticism finally collided with harsh reality. The liner approached the port before dawn, but was not allowed to dock. A security perimeter with a radius of one nautical mile (1,852 meters) was established around the ship.



Ultimately, authorities reached a compromise: passengers were taken ashore at the industrial port of Granadilla, as far away as possible from residential areas. The evacuation promises to be large-scale – the United States and several EU countries are already preparing special flights to evacuate their citizens. The remaining crew will be forced to make a melancholy voyage to the Netherlands, where the ship will undergo a thorough disinfection.
