The incident occurred in the Angamaly area near a temple where the animal had been brought during a festival. According to local media, the elephant suddenly broke free from its chains and began behaving aggressively, smashing everything in its path.
The victim was a 40-year-old mahout named Vishnu, who had delivered the animal to the temple. He died instantly from his injuries.
At least one other person was also reported injured and hospitalized. The animal was only subdued after tranquilizers were administered.
