Buddha born from flowers: an architectural wonder in Hokkaido (12 photos + 1 video)

Buddha Hill is a colossal statue of Buddha perched atop a small hill next to a cemetery on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The monument was created over 20 years ago, but it was only in December 2015 that the surrounding landscape was transformed to highlight the figure's grandeur.

The creators' goal was to build a prayer hall that would enhance the stone Buddha's appeal. The site is located on a gentle hillside amidst 180 hectares of cemetery land.

The statue stands 13.5 meters tall and weighs 1,500 tons. It is made of selected, high-quality solid stone. Until now, the Buddha stood alone in the field, creating a restless impression.

Tadao Ando is a Japanese architect, a follower of architectural minimalism and the International Style.

The architect, Tadao Ando, wanted to give visitors the opportunity to contemplate the Buddha in a more peaceful manner.

The idea was to conceal the statue under a lavender-covered mound, leaving only the head visible. This concept was called "Buddha emerging from the ground."

Hidden beneath the mound are a 40-meter-long tunnel and rotunda. The main idea was to create a vibrant spatial sequence, beginning with a long journey through the tunnel, to heighten the anticipation of meeting the statue, invisible from the outside.

When visitors reach the hall, they look up at the Buddha, whose head is crowned by a halo of heaven at the end of the tunnel.

Buddha Hill is planted with 150,000 lavender bushes, which turn a fresh green in the spring, a delicate purple in the summer, and are covered in silky snow in the winter.

This project should perhaps be considered on a landscape scale rather than an architectural one. It required a special mindset to reconfigure the environment and was a complex and invaluable experience.

The site has become an important part of Hokkaido's tourist routes. Buddha Hill thrives, remaining a draw for pilgrims, architecture enthusiasts, and ordinary travelers seeking peace and harmony.
