A "time capsule" belonging to the famous actor has gone under the hammer.





The Gooding auction has concluded for a remarkable Mercedes-Benz 500 E, also known as the "Mercedes-Benz from Porsche." The final bid was $357,000, more than triple the previous record price and nearly eight times the average price for such sedans. This high valuation is due to both the condition of this particular example and the identity of its previous owner.

The first owner of the sports sedan, produced in 1992, was the famous American actor and stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who owned the Mercedes-Benz 500 E until 2016. After Seinfeld, the four-door sedan had several more owners, but like the actor, they treated the car primarily as a collector's item. Therefore, the 500 E has covered only 3,750 kilometers since its production.

The main differences between the 500 E and other Mercedes-Benz W124s were its redesigned chassis, developed with the help of Porsche engineers, and its own engine. Its 5.0-liter V8 produced 326 hp. and 480 Nm: thus, in terms of power output, the sedan was only slightly inferior to the most powerful Porsche 911 models at the time. This model earned the nickname "Porsche among Mercedes" for its unique assembly process: due to several shortcomings on the Mercedes-Benz assembly line, sedans were partially assembled at Porsche's Zuffenhausen facility. Consequently, only slightly more than 10,000 of these cars were produced between 1991 and 1995.

According to Classic.com, the average 500 E now costs around $47,000, while the example previously considered the most expensive was valued at $100,800. Remarkably, the auctioneers' expected maximum bid for Jerry Seinfeld's car was only $240,000.
