The house that built the internet: where is the loneliest house in the world, and who really lives there (15 photos + 1 video)
You've probably seen a photo of a small, modest white house on a green island in the middle of a vast ocean.
It looks like someone dropped a brick into the wilderness.
The photo has spread across the internet, sparking rumors, legends, and millions of questions. Some said the singer Björk lived there, hiding from fans and world fame.
Others whispered it was a billionaire's apocalypse hideout. The truth turned out to be both simpler and more surprising.
Ellidaey Island is located off the southern coast of Iceland and is part of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago.

It's the third largest island in the archipelago, but the only thing that catches your eye is that same white building, now called "the loneliest house in the world."
The history of this house began in 1953, when a local hunting society decided to build a base for its members here. Hunters come here for the birds, especially the puffins, of which there are thousands on the island.
The house itself runs on propane, and water is collected directly from the sky during rainfall. There is no electricity, no usual comforts, just walls, a roof, and complete silence.

And what about Björk? In 2000, the Prime Minister of Iceland actually offered the singer an island as a gift in gratitude for her contribution to the country's culture.
But this was a completely different island with the same name, lost in Breiðafjörður Bay in western Iceland. Björk politely declined due to public outcry and concerns that the gift would attract crowds of tourists. But the internet picked up the pretty picture and made up its own story.
Visiting the real Ellidaey is almost impossible without a special permit from the hunting society. The island lacks a proper harbor, and the shores drop steeply into the ocean.
But even if you're lucky enough to get there, don't expect luxury. You'll be greeted by green hills, the cries of thousands of birds, and the feeling of standing at the edge of the earth.
However, this is precisely what people come here for—absolute solitude and the opportunity to escape the noisy world and be alone with nature and the ocean.
