French Vertical: How a Cliff Village Became a Refuge for Saints and Heroes (14 photos + 2 videos)

In the middle of a rocky gorge on the French Alzou River, the village of Rocamadour rises above the earth, seemingly emerging from a sheer cliff face.

Since the Middle Ages, this amazing corner of Occitania has attracted pilgrims from all over Europe. Here, among the centuries-old stones, lies a sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary and numerous historical monuments.

Tradition has it that Saint Amadour found his final resting place in these parts.

Saint Amadour

Locals believe that this name was the guise of the gospel tax collector Zacchaeus himself, the same one who, having left Jerusalem, brought the light of the new faith here.

Zacchaeus was a chief publican (tax collector), a wealthy man who received special attention from Jesus Christ.

Legends say that after the discovery of the hermit's incorrupt remains, genuine miracles began to occur at his grave. Word of the healing power of the relics quickly spread throughout the world, and first French kings flocked to the rock with generous gifts, and then ordinary pilgrims.

Thus, thanks to the donations of royal families, a village with churches and chapels grew up on an inaccessible cliff, eventually becoming a crucial stop on the pilgrimage route to the tomb of the Apostle James in Santiago de Compostela.

But Rocamadour amazes the imagination not only with its spiritual history. The main wonder here is the village itself, seemingly glued to the canyon wall. Its houses and churches climb a steep slope for 120 meters, clinging to the rocks. Endless staircases, carved directly into the rock, lead to the main shrines.

Notre Dame Church

About halfway up this vertical path, nestled among its mighty walls, lies the Church of Notre Dame.

Rebuilt in 1479, it houses Rocamadour's crown jewel—the wooden Black Madonna. It is said that Saint Amadour himself carved this statue.

A little higher up and off to the side is the tiny 12th-century Church of Saint-Michel, where the spirit of the ancient Benedictine community can still be felt.

And right in front of the pilgrimage church lies a spacious terrace, the Plateau Saint-Michel, offering a breathtaking view.

Roland's Sword

An amazing artifact is also kept here—a fragment of an ancient sword. Legend claims that this is none other than a piece of the legendary Durandal, a formidable blade that once belonged to the fearless knight Roland.

Saint-Sauveur Church

The walls of the neighboring Saint-Sauveur Church are covered with frescoes and inscriptions recounting the visits of famous figures.

Beneath it, deep within the rock, lies the underground Church of Saint-Amadour, discovered in 1166, where the relics of the saint himself rest. And at the very top of the cliff, like a crown, rises a medieval castle, built to protect these sacred places.
