Mass Brawl in Women's Basketball: Referee Knocked Out, Eight Girls Suspended
On the second day of the Sun Belt Championships, held during the traditional March Madness season in American college basketball, a clash between Coastal Carolina University and the University of South Alabama turned from a routine match into a full-blown action movie: five minutes before the buzzer, a dispute between the two teams sparked a mass brawl.
The spark was a heated exchange under the hoop between Coastal Carolina's Tracy Houston and South Alabama's Cordasia Harris. Houston was the first to take action, landing several punches. Reserve players rushed onto the court, attempting to subdue the two players, but only added fuel to the fire.
The most alarming moment was the intervention of referee Marla Girhar: the referee stepped between the athletes, but in the confusion, she was struck in the neck and head by a forearm and collapsed unconscious. Medics on duty quickly removed her from the court. To the relief of fans, doctors found no serious injury.
After reviewing the video footage, the conference leadership issued the harshest verdict. Houston was suspended for the remainder of the season, and South Alabama was without seven players: four were punished for leaving the bench without permission, and three more key players—Cordasia Harris, Amia Sutton, and Daniela Gonzalez—will miss the next game.
Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Pederson, after the final buzzer, acknowledged in a comment to reporters that the incident cast a shadow on the entire program: he said Houston was deeply remorseful, and such behavior was categorically inconsistent with the team's principles.
