American rapper Snoop Dogg (Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.) has become the honorary coach of the US team at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
The musician's position is purely a formality and is voluntary, but the US Olympic Committee believes Snoop is ideally suited to mentor the athletes off the field. The honorary coach's responsibilities include working to motivate the athletes. The Olympic Committee also noted the rapper's ability to connect with people and deliver humorous jokes, which would be a welcome distraction for athletes looking to take a break from the grueling competition.
"Known for his passion for community service, mentoring, and supporting youth, Snoop Dogg will bring his signature humor and warmth to motivate Team USA athletes," the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee said in a statement.
It is noted that Spoop Dogg already has experience coaching the Olympics. At the 2024 Paris Games, he served as a correspondent for an American television channel and also participated in the opening and closing ceremonies of the sporting event. For his journalism at the 2024 Olympics, the rapper won two Emmy Awards. At the upcoming Olympics, he will once again serve as a reporter for NBC and the Peacock service.
Snoop Dogg, despite the (not unfounded) image of a hardened Rastafarian ascribed to him, has long been involved in the world of sports. In 2005, he founded the Snoop Youth Football League. It is a nonprofit organization that helps children from poor and disadvantaged areas play football, through which it strives to impart to them the importance of teamwork, discipline, academic achievement, and, of course, simply coaching to identify the most talented athletes.
Interestingly, Snoop Dogg will become the first-ever honorary coach of Team USA, a volunteer position designed to inspire and support the athletes.
Among other things, the musician is using his popularity to raise money for the Team USA Fund, which collects donations to cover the training, equipment, and medical expenses of American Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
"Team USA is a true team of stars, and I'm here to encourage them, uplift them, and maybe impart a little wisdom from the sidelines," Snoop Dogg commented on his appointment.
