Young Olga Schubert (5) – tired, with reddened eyes that she rubs with her palms every now and then. She spent the whole day hard at work, peeling shrimp in a canning factory, like thousands of children in America of that era, whose childhoods were spent in sweat and fatigue for a few cents a day. Child labor was only abolished in 1938.

Children of the Griffin. Alabama, USA, 1936.

The "Children of the Griffin" are participants in a land development demonstration project in western Alabama, near Greensboro. They are all believed to be third- or fourth-generation descendants of a union between a white woman and an African-American man. Most of them are light-skinned and therefore reject life in black communities, but white society does not accept them either.
