A US Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed during a training flight near a military base in California, according to US media reports. The aircraft, which belonged to the Thunderbirds aerobatic team, crashed near Trona Airport and caught fire, but there was no threat to populated areas, according to the official Pentagon newspaper, Stars and Stripes.
The pilot of the fighter jet ejected safely during the incident and is safe. Preliminary reports indicate that the crash was caused by a technical malfunction or pilot error, but the exact cause will be determined during the investigation. The aircraft crashed in an uninhabited desert, where live-fire exercises with various branches of the armed forces are typically conducted.
An environmental team was dispatched to the crash site to remove
toxic materials, including highly flammable hydrazine. It is used in the F-16's Emergency Power Unit (EPU). It is a liquid that is extremely toxic to humans and animals.
The crash incident was the latest in a series of crashes involving American and Polish F-16 fighter jets in 2025. In August, a pilot died in a similar aircraft crash in Poland. The United States has also seen major aviation accidents in recent months, including the crash of a Cessna 55, which damaged nearby residential buildings.
