Peach Lake – a phenomenal place where the earth ceased to be solid (17 photos + 1 video)

On the edge of the Caribbean island of Trinidad lies a natural phenomenon that defies the very concept of a "lake." It's neither water bound by ice nor the ground beneath your feet.

It's a pulsating, breathing plain of natural asphalt, where you can walk on a surface that feels rubbery today and can swallow you like a quagmire tomorrow.

Imagine a lake you can walk on. Its surface isn't ice, but a tarry, sticky substance, sometimes soft and porous like a giant eraser, and in other places as shaky and treacherous as quicksand. Everywhere in this asphalt shell, fissures gape, revealing the water below, like openings in a winter river.

This is Pitch Lake. It is a natural reservoir of natural bitumen. It is mostly solid, allowing brave travelers to walk on its strange surface.

The depression collects both water and liquid tar rising from the earth's depths. The result is a surreal mixture. In some places it's as fluid as water, in others, as hard as stone.

Rocks, tree fragments, and other debris are forever embedded in this sticky mass, and as they accumulate new layers of asphalt, they transform into bizarre improvised sculptures and silent warnings of the true danger of this place.

The first European to describe the lake was Sir Walter Raleigh in 1595. He encountered this natural wonder during his unsuccessful hunt for El Dorado. He praised the quality of the resin, noting that "it does not melt in the sun like the Norwegian resin." His expedition failed, but he managed to document the unique ecosystem: "All made of resin... which flows from the ground in small springs... and also many springs with fresh water and fish in them."

Raleigh's quote is taken from the explorer's notes. His observations of freshwater springs and fish within the lake confirm its complex, hybrid nature.

This doesn't stop adventurers. They walk around the lake, dig poles into its viscous surface in more stable areas, and even dare to swim in the "puddles" of water that have opened up among the asphalt. Long known only to locals as an anomalous place, Peach Lake today attracts tourists eager to see one of the strangest lakes on the planet, where the ground beneath their feet lives its own slow, unpredictable life.
