A Portuguese caravel

A close relative of the jellyfish, the Portuguese caravel, or Physalia, inhabits tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Beneath its body are long, thin tentacles and thread-like structures that can reach up to 50 meters in length. Contact with the creature can cause severe pain, respiratory distress, and even cardiac arrest. The neurotoxin secreted by its tentacles is highly toxic, but a sting can be used to neutralize the venom.
