A 105-year-old electric car was put up for auction. It's still running (38 photos + 1 video)

An online auction was held for an Electric 27L automobile, produced by the now-defunct Milburn company. It was assembled back in 1920. It is equipped with an electric powertrain, is still running, and can be registered with the relevant authorities, but the authenticity of the electric car is unclear. The bidding closed at $64,000.





Milburn began in the 1870s as a carriage manufacturer, but later expanded into car body production, and in 1914, became an automaker itself, launching the assembly of electric cars. Its relative lightness and affordability were considered its competitive advantages. Furthermore, Milburn offered a system for swapping out dead batteries for charged ones. Milburn operated until 1923.

The example up for sale is equipped with an unspecified General Electric engine, which drives the rear wheels via a driveshaft. It is powered by five 12-volt batteries located in the front and rear of the vehicle. The 27L is steered with a lever, and braking is accomplished using both conventional drum brakes and a regenerative braking system reminiscent of a modern regenerative braking system.

The interior, trimmed in wood and fabric, features a standard bench seat and two rear-facing folding seats.

The rarity spent part of the past years in an American museum. Since 2002, it has been kept in a private collection, and three years ago, its current owner purchased it.
